70, died May 4, in his home in Redlands after an extended illness. He was born in Boonton, New Jersey, on May 20, 1933, and graduated from Boonton High School in 1951. After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1956, he spent six months in the Navy and was discharged under the Critical Skills Program. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Lockheed Propulsion, and Litton Guidance an d Control Systems (Now Northrop Grumann) until he retired in 1999. Later, he worked for Dynamics Research Inc. as a consultant for the Navy. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Handzel of Redlands; sons, James Handzel, Jr. and wife, Cathy residing in Sunnyvale, California, and Christopher Handzel and wife, Kandy of Redlands; and daughter, Catherine Davis and husband, Steve of Yucaipa. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Amanda, Brooke, Austin and Zachary. He was an active member of Redlands C ountry Club and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved camping, hiking and traveling. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, USGA, USSGA, The Navy League, and the Air Force Association. Services will be held on Sat urday, May 8 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. A reception will follow at Redlands Country Club. Interment will be a private family gathering on Tuesday, May 11 at Hillside Cemetery in Redlands. Published in the San Bernardino Sun on 5/6/2004
